NEW YORK CITY NURSING HOME NEGLECT LAWYERS

Also referred to as “blood poisoning,” sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body overreacts to an infection. Normally, our bodies fight infection by releasing chemicals into the bloodstream. If the body’s response to these chemicals is out of balance, sepsis will occur. This can lead to organ failure, septic shock, and even death.

Sepsis is triggered by an infection of some kind, such as pneumonia, infected bedsores, or infection of the abdomen, blood, or kidneys – and it can happen to anyone. However, it is most common and most dangerous in older adults, particularly if they have weakened immune systems or are suffering from serious, chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, cancer, or kidney disease.

Silbowitz, Garafola, Silbowitz, Schatz & Frederick, L.L.P. offers experienced legal counsel to elderly patients and their families in cases involving sepsis and septic shock at nursing homes. Since 1987, we have fought to level the playing field between the injured and the large corporations responsible for paying their claims. Our NYC nursing home abuse attorneys know how to recognize negligence and wrongdoing as it relates to sepsis, and we can help you determine whether you have a claim, take legal action, and recover fair compensation from the responsible party.

Symptoms of Sepsis in Elderly Patients

Early treatment is the only way to give an elderly patient the best possible chance at survival and recovery after developing sepsis. Elderly caregivers should be aware of the signs of first stage sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock.

The following are potential signs of first stage sepsis:

  • Fever of 101.3 or above, or a temperature below 95 (Fahrenheit)
  • Respiration rate of 20 breaths per minute or higher
  • Likelihood or diagnosis of an infection
  • Heart rate of 90 bpm or higher

The signs of severe sepsis include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Abdominal pain
  • Decreased urine output
  • Rapid mental changes
  • Heart rate abnormalities

If signs of first stage and severe sepsis go unnoticed or untreated, an elderly patient may go into septic shock. Along with the symptoms of severe sepsis, the patient will experience a dramatic decrease in blood pressure. It is extremely difficult to restore blood pressure after this point, and death may result.
